Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical: 1,4-butanediol is a colorless, transparent, viscous liquid with a sweet taste. It has a boiling point of 228°C, a melting point of 20°C, a relative density of 1.016, a refractive index of 1.446, and a flash point of 121°C. It is miscible with water, ethanol, and acetone but insoluble in petroleum ether, benzene, and toluene.
Chemical: 1,4-butanediol exhibits typical alcohol chemical properties, such as reacting with carboxylic acids to form esters, with acyl chlorides to form amides, and with aldehydes to form acetals. It also has double-bond characteristics, enabling addition, oxidation, and polymerization reactions. -
Product Features
The BDO production unit uses a complete process technology developed by Hong Kong Crown Corporation. Its unique acetylene unit design allows for the continuous and efficient addition of catalysts without interrupting production, ensuring stable operations. The catalysts demonstrate excellent activity, superior physical strength, and extended service life. The acetylene feedstock is derived from high-purity natural gas supplied by Yanchang Petroleum Group, processed through a precise cracking process to ensure high purity. This high-quality raw material enhances the precision and efficiency of the BDO production process. The final BDO product is of high purity, with minimal impurities, meeting the stringent quality requirements of mid- to high-end markets.
During the initial stages of using Raney nickel catalysts in the hydrogenation unit, the BDO product purity can be stabilized at over 99.7%, reaching up to 99.8%, with 2-methyl-BDO content below 100 ppm. During the middle and late stages of catalyst use, the 2-methyl-BDO content remains around 200–300 ppm, demonstrating precise process control and consistent product quality. -
Applications
BDO is widely used in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, paper, automotive, and consumer chemical industries. It is used to produce tetrahydrofuran (THF), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), polyurethane resin (PU Resin), coatings, and plasticizers, among others. THF dehydration products, PTMEG, are essential raw materials for producing spandex, polyester-ether copolymer elastomers, and polyurethane elastomers. BDO is also used for manufacturing vitamin B6, adipic acid, acetals, and 1,3-butadiene, serving as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals and pesticides, and as a solvent, coating resin, humectant, plasticizer, chain extender, and cross-linker.
