The antiknock mechanism of MMT is similar to that of tetraethyl lead. MMT decomposing at high temperature produces free manganese, which interacts with oxygen in the air to produce manganese oxide (MnO). Manganese oxide interacts with peroxides in unburned working gas to produce inactive organic oxides and high-priced manganese oxide. The elimination of peroxide in the engine cylinder working gas greatly reduces the knock phenomenon caused by spontaneous combustion of the engine.
